Figure with our tax return gonna buy a lawnmower this weekend, figure get some good prices before it becomes spring time and they go up. Whats the best brand out there??? Asked some of the guys here at work and it seems to be spread out amongst Hondas, Toro's and Craftsman.
What do you guys recommend?? Stay away from??
We have a new craftsman that works great. Or old one was about 20 years old and you couldn't kill it. the front wheel drive thing crapped out a few years ago but the mower still fired up and ran like a champ. We bought the new one for my dad a few years go for fathers day. He refused to use it because "the old one worked just fine". It ran great but leaked oil like crazy. I finally put it to the curb behind his back and the trashman got it before he realized it. :lol:
I'd recommend craftsman mowers.
John Deere makes an excellent mower. The one I use to use was about 20 years old and the only thing wrong is the front drive tires are almost bald.

So far everyone says go with the Deere? BTW does Sears sell Deere?
THere really isn't much to a mower, just stick to something with a dependable engine on it. I don't like all the power drive crap because it moves too slow for me.

i think lowes still sells john deere.. no discount for getting there before season, unless someone has bought and returned it already. expect to pay ~$400 for one.
How big a lawn are you mowing? I had a Monkey Wards (made by MTD) riding mower that lasted quite a while, and bought a John Deere rider to replace it. The knock against it is the mulching portion doesn't work worth a crap, so if you don't mind raking it's OK. The mulching kit just closes the exit hole on the deck, actual mulching blades would be a big help. Consumers report give the Deere & Cub Cadet high marks for the price, I think I bought the Deere because we have an actual John Deere dealer nearby so parts & repairs won't be an issue.

Go to weingartz off van dyke between hall road and 21 mile. Talk to a sale guy named terry. Tell him your budget and he will work with you. we buy thousands of dollars every year thru him and hes a good guy. Toro, Honda and deere are going to all do the same thing basically. maybe you wanna Look on craigslist though for something cheep. We keep a small mower in all the landscaping trailers for small things and never wanna buy them new. We've got 500 self propelled mowers for 150.00 on CL. its worth a shot before going new.
I also have to say craftsman. Although I wouldn't think anyone makes a bad mower.

Its not if its good or bad. Some like MTD are hard to locate replacment parts for. Thats why i suggested a lawn equiptment shop such as weingartz. You buy the mower and if there are any issues you go there and they have what you need. Now you cant say that if you buy from home depot or lowes. All they do it pull it out of a box and put it on the floor. finding parts 3 years later when it breaks is not their problem.Quote:

Stay away from FWD mowers. When the bag gets full you have less drive from the wheels.
I ended up just buying a used self propelled Craftsmen on CL for $75 when I bought my place and it works like a champ.

the sears dented appliance place had a few mowers when I was out there last.
Are we talking about riders or walk behind? For a rider, Deere all the way. For a self propelled walk-behind, Zack had it right... anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I've had mine (Scott's brand from Home Depot) for 8 years and it's never failed to start on the first pull. Maybe this spring I'll even change the oil for the first time. If it's just for you to mow your own lawn, I don't see the point in spending $400+ on a walk-behind.
